Originally released on October 8 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 (fully compatible with PS5), this collection meticulously remasters the first six mainline Final Fantasy games. Square Enix has chosen to refine rather than reinvent, maintaining the original pixelated charm while enhancing it for modern screens. The visual upgrade is impressive, offering a stunning experience whether you're playing on a large TV or in handheld mode.
The collection also boasts an orchestral upgrade to its legendary soundtrack, with the renowned composer Nobuo Uematsu ensuring the new arrangements stay true to the series' musical heritage. Additionally, the package includes quality-of-life enhancements such as the option to disable random encounters and increase experience and gil gains, making it easier for players to immerse themselves in the story without the usual grind.
As a delightful nod to fans, this edition comes with a sticker sheet featuring 12 classic character sprites, including the Black Mage, a Moogle, Terra, Kain, and the infamous Kefka mid-cackle. While not the flashiest of bonuses, it's a charming touch for enthusiasts of the franchise.
At its initial price of $74.99, the collection might have been a harder sell, but at the current $49.99, it's an easy recommendation for anyone keen to explore or revisit the roots of one of the most influential RPG series. With physical copies being the only collectible edition available, it's wise to grab one before they become scarce, especially at this price.
