Gears of War: Reloaded is set to break new ground by launching on PS5 simultaneously with Xbox. This multiplatform release marks a significant shift for the franchise, traditionally an Xbox exclusive. Dive in to discover more about this exciting development and the enhanced features fans can anticipate.
Gears of War has long been synonymous with Xbox, celebrated as one of its flagship franchises. However, in a groundbreaking move, Xbox announced via a Twitter (X) post on May 6 that Gears of War: Reloaded will launch across all platforms on August 26, including the PS5.
This decision aligns with Xbox's recent strategy of extending its exclusive titles to different platforms. In a January interview with GamerTag Radio, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer emphasized his commitment to this approach, stating, "We love our platform and our hardware, but we're not going to put walls up where people can engage with the great games our studios are building."
This move may foreshadow similar plans for the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day, potentially mirroring Reloaded's multiplatform and simultaneous release strategy. However, Xbox has yet to make any official announcements, leaving fans eager for further updates on their other exclusives.
The reveal of Gears of War: Reloaded took many by surprise, especially since the original game was remastered in 2015 with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. In an Xbox Wire post dated May 5, The Coalition’s Studio Head Mike Crump elaborated on what players can look forward to with this latest iteration.
Reflecting on the franchise's 20th anniversary in 2026, Crump remarked, "As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever."
Gears of War: Reloaded promises significant performance upgrades over the 2015 release. While the Ultimate Edition ran at 1080p and 30fps for the campaign, with 60fps for multiplayer, Reloaded will deliver 4k resolution at 60fps for the campaign and an impressive 120fps for multiplayer. Additional enhancements include 4k assets, remastered textures, improved post-processing effects, better shadows, and reflections.
The post also highlighted that players will enjoy immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no extra cost, encompassing a bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression.
Furthermore, owners of The Ultimate Edition prior to the announcement will receive a free upgrade to Reloaded. Eligible Xbox accounts will receive a code for the upgrade via direct message before the game's launch.
Gears of War: Reloaded is scheduled for release on August 26, priced at $39.99 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will be available on day one with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, offering fans an affordable way to experience this enhanced version of a classic.
