Global Outcry: High Switch 2 Game Prices Felt Worldwide

May 02,2025 Author: Jason

2023 has been a pivotal year for Nintendo, with the highly anticipated release of the Switch 2. This successor to the beloved original Switch offers fans a more powerful version of the console they've grown to love, featuring hardware improvements that many had hoped for. However, amidst global economic uncertainty, the launch of the Switch 2 presents a complex scenario for both Nintendo and gamers worldwide.

The $450 USD price tag for the console, coupled with the $80 USD price for Mario Kart World, has sparked intense debate. These prices have positioned the Switch 2 as a flashpoint in the ongoing discussion about the rising costs of gaming hardware and software, especially against the backdrop of the U.S.-China trade war.

Global Reception of the Switch 2

To understand how the world is reacting to the Switch 2, I reached out to editors from IGN's global network, covering regions in Europe, South America, and Asia. The response has been varied. While the hardware upgrades, such as a 120hz refresh rate, HDR, and 4K output, have been well-received, the absence of an OLED screen has been a significant point of contention.

Alessandro Digioia, editor-in-chief of IGN Italy, notes that their readers are largely dissatisfied. "The main concerns revolve around the price point, the lack of an OLED screen, the absence of a trophy/achievement system, and a modest launch lineup," he explains. Similarly, Pedro Pestana from IGN Portugal echoes these sentiments, stating, "Personally, I'm not that impressed with Switch 2, as it is basically a souped-up Switch 1 - better in every sense, but without the novelty factor of the original."

On the other hand, regions like Benelux and Turkey show a more positive reception. Nick Nijiland from IGN Benelux reports, "We have seen in our region that the console has been received very well. People complain about the price, but at the same time, the console sold out within hours." Ersin Kilic from IGN Turkey adds, "When I look at the comments, it is seen as positive that Nintendo corrected the points criticized on the first Switch."

In China, Kamui Ye from IGN China provides a balanced view, noting both disappointment and optimism. "The reveal event has been met with widespread disappointment due to its lackluster launch title lineup and perplexing regional pricing strategies," Ye says. However, they also highlight the optimism among core fans regarding Nintendo's long-term plans and the console's backward compatibility and hardware refinements.

Hardware Price and Tariff Concerns

The Switch 2 is set to launch at a $450 USD price point in the United States, with pre-orders delayed due to ongoing tariffs imposed by President Trump. This situation has forced Nintendo to reconsider its rollout strategy for the console's June 5 release date.

In Europe, where tariffs are less of an issue, pre-orders are already underway. Antonia Dressler from IGN Germany comments, "In Germany, nobody is really worrying about the tariff situation regarding the Switch 2." However, the pricing of the console remains a contentious issue, with comparisons being drawn to the PS5.

Zaid Kriel from IGN Africa notes that the Switch 2's pricing puts it in direct competition with other next-gen consoles. "It is not crazy pricing, but it's now in the same bracket as the PS5 and Xbox Series X," he says.

In regions like Brazil, the tariff war exacerbates the pricing issue. Matheus de Lucca from IGN Brazil explains, "The current tariff war initiated by the United States makes the scenario even worse for Brazil, since the Real is a weak currency compared to the dollar."

Japan presents a unique situation with a region-locked version of the console at a lower price point. Daniel Robson from IGN Japan states, "I think Nintendo knew they couldn’t go over 50,000 yen in Japan – the weak yen means the relative pricing scale is very different here."

Software Pricing: A Major Concern

Despite hardware and tariff issues, the pricing of software has emerged as the most significant concern for many. The $80 USD price for Mario Kart World has been particularly contentious, with fears that this could set a precedent for even higher game prices in the future.

Alessandro Digioia from IGN Italy highlights the widespread dissatisfaction with Nintendo's new pricing structure. "Many feel that Nintendo's new pricing structure is unjustifiable, especially in light of recent increases that came with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S era," he says.

Antonia Dressler from IGN Germany adds, "Especially with the 90 Euro for Mario Kart World, that is a record for a video game in Germany; not even titles like Assassin’s Creed cost as much."

In China, while there are no official plans for a release, Kamui Ye notes that game prices in Hong Kong and Japan are relatively lower, which may influence the gray market.

Despite these challenges, the Switch 2 is poised to be a success, given its recognizable upgrade from one of the most popular consoles. However, the high prices of games during economic hardship and the uncertainties surrounding tariffs and international politics could impact its launch. What's clear is that Nintendo has generated excitement worldwide, though with more caveats than usual.
