The James Gunn-led DC Cinematic Universe's Phase 1 kicks off with his upcoming Superman movie, which the director and studio executive describes as pivotal for establishing the Gods and Monsters storyline.
"It's absolutely critical," Gunn revealed in his June 19 interview with Entertainment Weekly. "While Creature Commandos serves its purpose, Peacemaker and Superman truly drive the overarching narrative forward."
Gunn emphasized finding the delicate balance between rewarding dedicated fans and welcoming newcomers, recognizing that accessible storytelling might convert casual viewers into devoted followers.
"My goal is ensuring anyone can dive into these stories without prior knowledge," Gunn explained. "While supplementary projects enrich the experience, they're not mandatory viewing – though that might evolve as our universe expands, similar to how Infinity War became essential viewing before Endgame."
He added, "Currently, you shouldn't need Superman to understand Supergirl's story. Though Superman connects to Peacemaker, we've designed episodes with 'Previously in the DCU' recaps to make the television content particularly viewer-friendly."
The Superman reboot arrives July 8, followed by Peacemaker Season 2 premiering August 21 on Max.
