Godzilla, the iconic monster known for his destructive rampages in Tokyo, takes his chaos to the United States in IDW Publishing and Toho's new series, "Godzilla vs. America." The series, which began with "Godzilla vs. Chicago #1," continues its thrilling narrative with "Godzilla vs. Los Angeles #1," set to release on April 30, 2025. This special anthology features four unique stories of Godzilla's assault on Los Angeles, crafted by an impressive lineup of creators including Gabriel Hardman, J. Gonzo, Dave Baker, and Nicole Goux.
The release of "Godzilla vs. Los Angeles #1" comes at a sensitive time, following the recent wildfires that have impacted the city. IDW acknowledges this unfortunate timing, noting that the issue was planned well in advance. In a show of support for the affected community, IDW has decided to donate all proceeds from this comic to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc), which will aid bookstores and comic shops in their recovery efforts.
In a heartfelt letter to retailers and readers, IDW emphasized their commitment to the community and the unintentional timing of the comic's theme with the real-world events. They highlighted that "Godzilla" often symbolizes the impact of tragedies, whether from human actions or natural disasters, and stressed that their aim is not to capitalize on these events but to explore resonant themes.
Associate editor Nicolas Niño, a native of Los Angeles, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "Having been born and raised in LA, I couldn’t be happier to work on a comic packed with some of the city’s most talented cartoonists." He detailed the exciting stories within the issue, from Godzilla battling giant lowrider mechs to rampaging through theme parks and even exploring the city's subway system. Niño emphasized the theme of Angelenos uniting to combat a force of nature, celebrating the resilience of Los Angeles amidst a challenging start to the year.
The final order cutoff for "Godzilla vs. Los Angeles #1" is March 24, 2025. For more on upcoming releases, be sure to check out what Marvel and DC have in store for 2025.
