YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, recently shared in his video titled 'A Bad Month' that he had been working on an animated adaptation of the critically acclaimed survival horror game Soma, only for the project to fall through, leaving him deeply disappointed. Soma, developed by Frictional Games—the minds behind the Amnesia series—was released in 2015 and has since been praised for its engaging storyline, which Jacksepticeye considers among his top favorites.
In his video, Jacksepticeye opened up about a challenging creative period, marked by the cancellation or stagnation of various projects, including the Soma animated show. He expressed his excitement for the project, which he had been developing with the game's developers for a year, and his disappointment when it abruptly fell apart due to an unnamed party wanting to take the project "in a different direction."
The cancellation of the Soma animated show significantly disrupted Jacksepticeye's plans for 2025, as he had intended to focus much of his year on this creative endeavor. The unexpected turn of events left him questioning his priorities and struggling with a sense of frustration and loss over what he had hoped to achieve and share with his audience.
Since the release of Soma, Frictional Games has continued to innovate within the horror genre with titles like Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. However, Frictional's creative director, Thomas Grip, has indicated a shift in focus away from purely horror themes towards exploring other emotional qualities in their games, aiming to provide players with immersive experiences beyond just fear.
