Exciting news for fans of the John Wick franchise: a new animated prequel film has been officially announced, set to explore the legendary 'Impossible Task' that shaped John Wick's formidable reputation. Revealed at CinemaCon, this project not only promises to delve deep into the backstory of the iconic assassin but also marks the return of Keanu Reeves, who will lend his voice to the character. This comes alongside the confirmation of Reeves reprising his role in the upcoming live-action John Wick 5.
The animated film will take us back in time, showcasing John Wick's harrowing journey as he undertakes the Impossible Task. This mission involves eliminating all his rivals in a single night, a feat that ultimately allows him to break free from the High Table's control and reunite with his beloved Helen. The narrative aims to enrich the mythology surrounding John Wick, offering fans a deeper understanding of his character's motivations and the high stakes he faces.
True to the style of the live-action films, the animated prequel will feature the signature high-octane action sequences that John Wick enthusiasts have come to expect. It's designed to appeal to a mature audience, maintaining the series' intense and sophisticated tone.
The production team behind the animated film includes key members of the John Wick series: Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski, and Keanu Reeves. Executive producers will include 87Eleven Entertainment’s Alex Young and Jason Spitz.
Directing the film is Shannon Tindle, a seasoned animator known for his work on the Netflix film Ultraman: Rising and the acclaimed Kubo and the Two Strings. Vanessa Taylor, celebrated for her contributions to Game of Thrones, Divergent, and The Shape of Water, will pen the screenplay.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting the unique storytelling opportunities that animation offers. The John Wick universe continues to expand rapidly. Alongside the four mainline films and the announced John Wick 5, the franchise includes two spinoff films: Ballerina, set for release on June 6, and another starring Donnie Yen as Caine, scheduled to begin production this summer. Additionally, Lionsgate Television has brought us The Continental: From the World of John Wick, available on Peacock and Amazon Prime, and is developing John Wick: Under the High Table, with Stahelski and Reeves as executive producers.
