LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex Skeleton Model Unveiled

The LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex set, available exclusively at the LEGO Store, is a visually stunning and ambitious build that captures the imagination of dinosaur enthusiasts and LEGO fans alike. At first glance, the sheer size of this 1:12 scale model of a real T-Rex is awe-inspiring.

Priced at $249.99 at the LEGO Store, the detail in this set is remarkable. The ribs are built at varying lengths to form a realistic rib "cage," while the use of dark-colored bricks enhances the shadow effect, making the light-colored "bone" bricks stand out vividly. Despite its intricate appearance, the set is surprisingly easy to assemble, which only adds to its appeal.

My fascination with dinosaurs began in childhood, particularly after visiting the American Museum of Natural History where the towering T-Rex skeleton left a lasting impression. Later, Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" further fueled my interest with its vivid description of the dinosaur:

"It came on great oiled, resilient, striding legs. It towered thirty feet above half of the trees, a great evil god, folding its delicate watchmaker's claws close to its oily reptilian chest. Each lower leg was a piston, a thousand pounds of white bone, sunk in thick ropes of muscle, sheathed over in a gleam of pebbled skin like the mail of a terrible warrior."

For many years, the popular image of the T-Rex was of it standing upright with its tail dragging:

However, scientific understanding evolved, revealing that the T-Rex actually stood with its spine parallel to the ground, using its tail as a counterbalance:

The above image features "Sue," the most complete T-Rex skeleton found at 90%. Its discovery by paleontologist Sue Hendrickson transformed our knowledge of T-Rex anatomy, including the identification of gastralia—tiny bones supporting the dinosaur's belly and breathing.

The T-Rex depicted in the 1993 film Jurassic Park reflects an outdated understanding of the dinosaur. However, recent discoveries indicate a heavier build, weighing nine to ten tons, due to the presence of gastralia.

This life-sized model, based on Sue's bones, provides the most accurate depiction of a T-Rex:

The LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex set aligns with this updated understanding, presenting the T-Rex in a horizontal position. While it does not include the gastralia, the rib positioning suggests a "barrel-chested" creature. The model's arms are positioned forward, consistent with the latest scientific findings as seen in the Field Museum's display of Sue.

The set includes 25 sealed plastic bags for assembly. You start by building the black stand, followed by the T-Rex's backbone and attaching it to vertical supports. The rest of the model, including the neck, legs, hips, ribs, arms, tail, and head, are assembled and attached sequentially. The legs and torso are fixed, but the arms, head, and tail are adjustable and posable.

At nearly three-and-a-half feet long, this model requires a spacious area for display. It would look best on a wide, flat surface like a dresser or coffee table rather than on a crowded shelf.

The set is part of LEGO's Jurassic Park franchise, including two minifigures of Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler from the original film. However, the inclusion of these figures and the Jurassic Park branding feels somewhat forced, as the set's name and the option to remove the minifigure display suggest a focus more on the T-Rex itself than on movie tie-ins.

The LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Set #10335, is priced at $269.99 and consists of 3011 pieces. It's a standalone masterpiece that, like the LEGO Titanic build, does not rely on minifigure tie-ins for its appeal.
