Marvel Brings Back Baddie From 2008's Iron Man for MCU Vision Quest Series

Feb 19,2025 Author: Mia

Marvel's upcoming Vision Quest series is reportedly bringing back a villain from the very first MCU film, Iron Man.

Deadline reports that Faran Tahir will reprise his role as Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, the leader of an Afghan terrorist group from Iron Man's opening scenes. Almost two decades after his initial appearance, where he held Tony Stark captive before being betrayed by Obadiah Stane, al-Wazar is set for a return.

This marks a significant MCU comeback for the character, unseen since the first act of the 2008 film. Similar to Samuel Sterns' reappearance in Captain America: Brave New World, this unexpected return adds intrigue to Vision Quest, starring Paul Bettany as White Vision. The series currently lacks a release date.

While initially portrayed as the head of a generic terrorist group, al-Wazar's backstory was significantly enriched in Phase 4. The revelation that his group was connected to the Ten Rings, a detail initially a subtle nod to comic book lore, was greatly expanded upon in 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

This retroactive connection establishes al-Wazar as a Ten Rings commander, suggesting a potential link between Vision Quest and Shang-Chi, given the latter's open-ended conclusion.

However, Vision Quest might also explore forgotten or less-developed MCU elements in a similar vein to Deadpool & Wolverine's approach to the defunct Fox Marvel universe.

Adding to the anticipation, James Spader is also rumored to return as Ultron for the first time since Avengers: Age of Ultron. Details about the series remain scarce.
