Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series set in The Forgotten Realms universe, with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and WeCrashed creator Drew Crevello attached to the project alongside Hasbro.
The Forgotten Realms, the iconic fantasy setting for D&D role-playing games, previously served as the backdrop for both the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie and Larian Studios' critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3 video game.
Industry reports suggest this Netflix adaptation could become the streaming giant's most ambitious fantasy series to date. While Crevello has reportedly written the pilot and taken on showrunner duties, neither Netflix nor Hasbro have officially confirmed the project.
After extended negotiations typical for high-value intellectual properties, the fantasy series is moving forward with development at Netflix, according to Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. Insiders suggest a successful launch could pave the way for an expanded D&D television universe.
While the Netflix series appears promising, there's been no update on a sequel to the fan-favorite Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which underperformed commercially for Paramount Pictures despite its critical reception.
Lead actor Chris Pine expressed enthusiasm about returning for a potential sequel in November 2023, stating he was "fairly confident" about its prospects, but production updates remain scarce.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins indicated willingness to greenlight another D&D film on one condition: significant budget reductions. "We need to find ways to produce it more economically," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, enthusiasts can enjoy D&D content through Amazon's Secret Level anthology series, which features animated Dungeons & Dragons storytelling.
