Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio Fuels AAA Game Speculation

A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is generating significant buzz within the gaming community. Confirmed by a recent job posting, this unannounced studio, Sony's 20th first-party addition, is developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5.

The news adds to the excitement surrounding PlayStation's already impressive roster of first-party studios, renowned for their critically acclaimed titles. The addition of this secretive studio further expands Sony's development capabilities, joining established giants like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Recent acquisitions such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite have already broadened PlayStation's reach, and this new studio promises even more innovative projects.

The identity of the studio's personnel remains shrouded in mystery, but speculation points to two potential origins. One theory suggests the studio may house a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the July 2024 layoffs where 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team, reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project, could be the driving force behind the new AAA title.

Alternatively, the studio could be led by industry veteran Jason Blundell, formerly of Call of Duty: Black Ops fame. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, a studio shuttered in March 2024 after facing undisclosed challenges. However, a significant number of Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, leading to speculation that Blundell's team is now under the PlayStation umbrella, potentially reviving or reimagining Deviation Games' abandoned AAA project.

While Sony remains tight-lipped about the studio's identity and its project, the confirmation of a new AAA development team is undoubtedly exciting news for PlayStation fans. The wait for an official announcement may be lengthy, but the prospect of another first-party PlayStation game in development is cause for celebration.
