This concludes my retro game eShop series, as suitable console selections dwindle. Saving the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, boasting a timeless library still seeing re-releases. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving 2.5D platformer, features a charming protagonist navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Enjoy vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. The PlayStation 2 sequel, while less impressive, completes the package.
A landmark JRPG, Final Fantasy VII captivated the Western audience and propelled the PlayStation to success. While the remake exists, this classic offers the original experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries embraced more eccentric elements, this debut remains a gripping, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of a G.I. Joe episode. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter into 3D. Though its polygons show their age, the vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses deliver a compelling shooter experience.
While overshadowed by its predecessor, Chrono Cross stands as a unique and visually stunning RPG. Its large cast of characters, though unevenly developed, and unforgettable soundtrack make it a worthwhile experience.
Among the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its cohesive design. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this standout entry and others in the series.
A unique blend of platforming and adventure elements, Tomba! offers engaging action and unexpected challenges from the creator of Ghosts ‘n Goblins.
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, sharing DNA with Lunar, provides a bright, cheerful RPG experience with a satisfying combat system.
This collection features the first three Tomb Raider games, allowing players to experience Lara Croft's early adventures. The original game’s focus on tomb raiding is a highlight.
A deconstruction of the RPG genre, moon offers a unique adventure game experience with a thought-provoking narrative. Its unconventional approach may not appeal to all, but its message is compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thanks for reading!
