Sony's PC gaming policy sparks controversy among players. The company's requirement for PSN tethering, even in single-player titles, coupled with regional service limitations, restricts access to new releases.
Recently, Sony announced policy adjustments. While not entirely abandoning PSN tethering for PC games, they've introduced some concessions. PSN tethering will be optional for the following titles:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players opting for PSN tethering will receive these bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Black Bear armor set, the first "Lost Things" chest, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November investor meetings, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged player resistance to PSN connection requirements, emphasizing its importance for security and order. While mentioning service-based games, he failed to clarify how mandatory PSN accounts enhance security in single-player games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
Times have changed, and this policy remains a point of contention.
