Punisher Star Jon Bernthal Reveals Why He Almost Didn't Return For Daredevil: Born Again

Since the 2015 Netflix series, it's almost impossible to imagine Charlie Cox's Daredevil without Jon Bernthal's Punisher. However, Bernthal recently revealed why he initially declined to reprise his role in the Disney+ revival, Daredevil: Born Again.
The Wolf of Wall Street actor explained that the initial approach for the series didn't align with his vision for Frank Castle, the Punisher. "Ultimately, I didn't see it," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I didn't see the version of Frank, and what they wanted from Frank didn't really make sense to me. I thought it wouldn't appeal to the fans and wouldn't be congruent. It was not something I was really interested in doing. So we had to walk away."
Following a significant creative overhaul after the writers' and actors' strikes, producer Dario Scardapane was appointed as the new showrunner. This change proved pivotal for Bernthal's involvement.
"They really brought me into the conversation," Bernthal said of Scardapane, with whom he previously collaborated on The Punisher series and other Marvel projects. "We really got specific about where Frank is psychologically, where Frank's at physically."
