The Samsung S85D stands out as the most budget-friendly option in Samsung's 2024 OLED lineup. While the higher-end S90D features a quantum dot OLED panel and comes with a $500 higher price tag, the S85D utilizes a standard W-OLED panel. In terms of image quality, it rivals the LG B4 OLED TV, which is $200 more expensive. As a true OLED panel, the S85D delivers near-instantaneous response times, a near-infinite contrast ratio, and true blacks, making it superior to any other panel type for most applications. For those worried about burn-in, rest assured that it's rarely a concern with OLED TVs, primarily affecting computer monitors with static images.
The Samsung S85D comes equipped with all the essential features desired in a modern gaming TV, including HDMI 2.1 ports and a native 120Hz panel, allowing for 4K gaming at 120Hz on a PS5 or Xbox Series X. It also supports variable refresh rate and auto low latency mode, making it an ideal match for the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, which can run most games at true 4K resolution and 120Hz, surpassing the upscaled 1440p in "Performance" mode.
At this price point, the 65" Samsung S85D is the most affordable option for a brand-new, fully warrantied OLED TV, especially if you prefer a reputable brand like Samsung. The upcoming 2025 OLED TVs are expected to feature only minor upgrades, such as a slightly faster processor or improved anti-glare films, with the panel technology remaining largely the same as in 2024 models.
