HBO has celebrated the impressive viewership performance of The Last of Us Season 2, revealing a surge in audience numbers that propelled the series past 90 million global viewers since Season 1 concluded.

The Season 2 finale attracted 3.7 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S., slightly trailing behind the season premiere's 5.3 million. Warner Bros. anticipates significant post-premiere growth for the finale's viewership, particularly due to lower Memorial Day weekend engagement.

For comparison, the Season 1 finale holds the series record with 8.2 million viewers - a milestone Season 2 hasn't yet matched.

A notable achievement for Season 2 lies in its higher per-episode average viewership, currently standing at approximately 37 million viewers worldwide with continued growth expected. Season 1 concluded its run averaging 32 million U.S. cross-platform viewers after ninety days.

IGN's recent review of Season 2's finale awarded it a score of 6/10, describing the conclusion as "a disorienting yet thrilling rush toward its agonizing cliffhanger ending."

The acclaimed series debuted in January 2023 and quickly established itself as one of the finest video game adaptations, with Season 1 securing eight Emmy Awards from twenty-four nominations.

Showrunner Craig Mazin recently confirmed plans extending beyond Season 3 during an interview with Collider. He explained that completing The Last of Us' narrative arc within Season 3 alone would prove impossible, strongly suggesting the necessity for a fourth season.

"We'll likely need Season 4 to properly conclude the story from Naughty Dog's games," Mazin stated. "While Season 3 may be extended, wrapping everything up in one more season simply isn't feasible."
