Still wondering about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Rest assured, the Deadpool & Wolverine director remains committed to the project - and we've got fresh confirmation straight from screenwriter Jonathan Tropper himself.
"I'm just as excited as you are," Tropper revealed exclusively to Screen Rant. "The wait might be shorter than anticipated."
Details about the film remain scarce. What we do know is that the story unfolds after The Rise of Skywalker events. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy clarified the timeline position during a Deadline interview: "Shawn's standalone story takes place approximately five to six years after Episode IX," she said in February. This positions Levy's project as the first cinematic exploration of the post-Sequel Trilogy era.
Kennedy confirmed the film's release will follow 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu feature. "We're currently focused on the Mandalorian movie before moving to Shawn's production," she explained. Another intriguing detail? Reports indicate Ryan Gosling may take on a leading role.
Tropper's recent comments suggest the project may finally be gaining momentum. However, fans should prepare for patience - the earliest possible release window appears to be late 2026, possibly stretching into 2027.
Disney's Star Wars theatrical releases paused after 2019's controversial The Rise of Skywalker, with multiple canceled projects including Kevin Feige's proposed film and a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Last November saw another scheduled Star Wars film removed from Disney's 2026 calendar.

Lucasfilm's 2023 Star Wars Celebration unveiled three major film projects: Dave Filoni's New Republic era movie connecting to The Mandalorian universe, James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi prehistoric epic, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order featuring Daisy Ridley's Rey continuing her post-Rise of Skywalker journey.
The New Jedi Order project has undergone creative changes recently, with Steven Knight replacing original writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains central to Disney's Star Wars vision, with reports suggesting multiple future appearances.
The Star Wars pipeline extends even further. Late 2023 revealed X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is developing a new trilogy unrelated to the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier speculation.
Next up for Star Wars fans? Andor Season 2 premieres April 22 on Disney+ with an action-packed triple-episode debut.
