Sonic's Future Unveiled at IGN Fan Fest 2025: IDW's Bold New Direction

May 02,2025 Author: Patrick

IDW's beloved Sonic the Hedgehog comic series recently celebrated a significant milestone with the release of its 75th issue. This landmark issue, Sonic the Hedgehog #75, depicted the epic conclusion of the battle between Team Sonic and the nefarious villain Clutch. Following this climactic showdown, the narrative continues with a new arc titled "Scattered Pieces," which spans from issues #76 to #80. With issue #76 now available in stores, IGN is thrilled to offer an exclusive sneak peek at new artwork from the penultimate chapter of this gripping storyline during IGN Fan Fest. Dive into the slideshow gallery below to explore the three captivating covers for Sonic the Hedgehog #79, alongside the previously unveiled "Scattered Pieces" covers.

The "Scattered Pieces" saga is penned by the series' mainstay writer, Ian Flynn. Sonic the Hedgehog #79 boasts interior artwork and a main cover by the talented Adam Bryce Thomas, complemented by variant covers designed by Tyler Mcgrath and Nathalie Fourdraine.

Here's the official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog #79 from IDW:

The long-running feud between ace sniper Whisper and sinister assassin Mimic is coming to a climactic showdown!

Only one of these former comrades will walk away! Can Tangle and Silver help turn the tide of battle? Or will Whisper suffer another friend getting caught in the crossfire? It’s a thrilling battle years in the making!

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Ian Flynn shared his excitement about the series' direction: "IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog has been going strong for seven years now, and in that time has cultivated a number of storylines, characters, and narrative elements it can call its own. A lot of those all came to a head in Evan Stanley’s latest arc. Reaching a story’s climax is always fun, but I’m also just as eager to explore the follow-up. There will be a lot of fans asking 'What happens next?' My arc gets to answer that, bring a few conclusions of my own, and set the stage for Evan’s next major arc with the series."

Sonic the Hedgehog #76 is currently available in stores, with the eagerly anticipated issue #77 set to hit shelves on March 19. Fans can secure their copy of the latest issue by preordering at their local comic shop (find your nearest shop here).

As part of IGN Fan Fest 2025, we also provided an early glimpse into IDW's new Godzilla shared universe, further expanding their dynamic range of comic offerings.
