Valve has refuted recent claims that its Steam platform experienced a "major" data breach, explicitly stating there was "NO compromise" of Steam systems.
Though some users expressed concerns about reports suggesting over 89 million user records were exposed, Steam's internal investigation confirmed only "historical SMS messages" were leaked—none of which contained personal information.
In an official communication on Steam, Valve clarified: "After reviewing the leaked sample, we've confirmed the exposed data consisted solely of outdated SMS verification codes with 15-minute validity periods along with recipient phone numbers. Crucially, this data didn't link phone numbers to Steam accounts, passwords, payment details, or any other personal information."
The company emphasized: "Expired verification codes pose no security threat to Steam accounts. Additionally, any account changes initiated via SMS will always trigger email and/or Steam secure message confirmations."
Valve used this opportunity to strongly recommend enabling Steam Mobile Authenticator for two-factor authentication, describing it as "the optimal method for receiving secure account notifications."
With data breaches becoming increasingly common across platforms—and considering Steam's massive userbase exceeding 89 million accounts—concerns about potential security issues were understandable. The most notorious gaming-related breach dates back to 2011 when PlayStation Network suffered a nearly month-long outage affecting 77 million accounts.
Security risks extend beyond consumer data. In October 2023, Pokémon developer Game Freak experienced a major intrusion exposing current/former employee details and proprietary development plans. Earlier that same year, Sony disclosed breaches compromising data for approximately 7,000 employees, while December 2023 saw Insomniac Games suffer leaks of Marvel's Spider-Man development materials.
