Application Description

Tichu is a shedding game that integrates mechanics from Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker.

Tichu is a partnership card game where players sit opposite their teammates. Partners work together to score points and gain control across multiple rounds. The first team to reach a predetermined point total wins the game.

The Tichu deck contains 56 cards across four suits: Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars. Each suit consists of 13 cards ranked from 2 to Ace, plus four special cards: the Dragon, Phoenix, Hound, and Mah Jong.

Each player starts with eight cards and may declare a "Grand Tichu"—a 200-point bet that they will be first to empty their hand. After all players decide, six additional cards are dealt, ending the chance to call Grand Tichu. Before playing their first card, a player can instead call a "Tichu"—a 100-point bet on going out first. The main differences are timing, number of cards seen, and point values.

Once all 56 cards are dealt (14 per player), the exchange phase begins. Each player passes one card face down to every other player—three cards in total (one to each opponent and one to their partner)—and receives three in return.

The player holding the Mah Jong starts the first trick by playing any valid combination. Other players must either pass or beat it with a higher combination of the same type (except for "Bombs," covered later). For example, a single card is beaten only by a higher single card; sequences and full houses can only be beaten by longer or higher-ranked versions. When all others pass, the last player to play collects the trick and leads the next combination. If they have no cards left, they "go out," and play passes to the player on their right. A round ends once both teammates have no cards left. If only one player remains with cards, they receive a penalty and must give their remaining cards to the opponents, while their won tricks go to the first player who went out.

The game concludes when a team reaches or exceeds the target score set at the beginning.
