May 01,2025 Author: Jason

After a long wait of 25 years, fans of classic RPGs can rejoice as Capcom's beloved title, Breath of Fire IV, makes a triumphant return to PC. Originally launched on the PlayStation in Japan and North America in 2000, and in Europe a year later, the game saw a PC port in Europe and Japan in 2003. Now, thanks to GOG's ongoing Preservation Program, this iconic game has been meticulously updated for modern PCs and is available DRM-free on their platform.

In Breath of Fire IV, players follow the journey of Ryu, a protagonist with the unique ability to transform into a dragon, as he joins forces with other warriors to thwart an emperor's plan to obliterate the world. The narrative, coupled with engaging gameplay, has kept fans enthralled for decades.

The enhanced version of the game is fully optimized for today's systems, ensuring seamless compatibility with Windows 10 and 11. It boasts both English and Japanese localizations, and players can enjoy improved graphics thanks to an upgraded DirectX renderer. New display options, such as Windowed Mode, V-Sync, Anti-Aliasing, and refined gamma correction, enhance the visual experience. Additionally, the audio engine has been upgraded, bringing back missing environmental sounds and offering new configuration options for a richer auditory experience.

Alongside Breath of Fire IV, GOG has also revived several other classic titles today, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The full list of games now available through GOG's Preservation Program includes:

  • Ultima Underworld 1+2
  • Ultima 9: Ascension
  • Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire
  • Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams
  • Worms: Armageddon
  • Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
  • Realms of the Haunting
  • Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon
  • Stonekeep

This comprehensive update and preservation effort by GOG not only brings back Breath of Fire IV but also ensures that a wide array of classic games remain accessible and enjoyable on modern hardware.
