Fans are smashing Civilization 7 on Steam: The game is being heavily criticized

Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A Disappointing Debut

Anticipation ran high among Firaxis fans for the release of Civilization VII, hoping for another classic in the series. However, the game's reception on Steam has been overwhelmingly negative, with initial reviews citing a subpar interface, outdated graphics, and a general feeling of incompleteness.

At the time of writing, over 1,000 reviews have been submitted, resulting in a dismal 37% score. Players have voiced significant concerns.

User Cool CGI Dog, after a 1.5-hour playtime, expressed their disappointment: "The game feels blatantly unfinished, especially for a Civ title. The resource icons look like they're from 1998, the interface is atrocious, and everything is incredibly sloppy. There's a distinct lack of polish, which is shocking from Firaxis. Civ VI is light years ahead of this incomplete mess. At minimum, Civ VII's interface needs a complete overhaul to justify its exorbitant $70 price tag."

Another player, WillNever, echoed these sentiments after 2.5 hours of gameplay: "The interface looks and feels like an alpha build, untouched since. While the new mechanics are interesting, navigating this awful UI is a monumental task. Months of refinement are needed to make this game enjoyable."

The consensus among many reviewers is that the game launched prematurely and requires substantial improvements. The $70 price point is particularly under fire, deemed disproportionate to the current product quality.

Series fans remain hopeful that Firaxis will address the criticism through updates, restoring the game to its expected standard of excellence. The Civilization franchise has always been synonymous with quality and meticulous design; players expect the seventh installment to eventually live up to that legacy, but its current state falls far short.
