11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has recently unveiled a new trailer for their much-anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters. As the release date draws near, the studio took a moment to reminisce about their groundbreaking title, This War of Mine, which catapulted them to international fame over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its stark and somber atmosphere, The Alters introduces a narrative that's both passionate and infused with humor. This new game centers on the trials and tribulations of alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the tonal shift, the developers highlight a deep thematic connection between the two games.
Both titles focus on the theme of survival, albeit in vastly different settings. In This War of Mine, players are immersed in the brutal realities of war, managing resources and facing daily challenges to ensure the survival of a group in a besieged city. On the other hand, The Alters presents a survival scenario as a race against time, with players needing to maneuver their mobile base to escape a relentless sun that threatens to reduce everything to dust.
These games challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into hostile territories to gather essential resources. The key distinction between them lies in their protagonists: This War of Mine involves guiding a diverse group of civilians, whereas The Alters features a team made up of various alternate versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is scheduled to launch in 2025 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass right from its release date.
