Microsoft Layoffs End New Warcraft Rumble Content
Jan 21,2026Author: Alexander
As the full impact of Microsoft's significant layoffs becomes apparent, Blizzard has confirmed that its mobile game, Warcraft Rumble, will receive no further new content. Developers have reported being let go as part of these cuts.
Warcraft Rumble represented a major push by Blizzard to enter the lucrative mobile gaming market with a title set in the Warcraft universe. Development commenced in 2016, with the game launching globally in 2023. This free-to-play tower defense RTS drew inspiration from titles like Clash of Clans, with a PC version following later in the year.
In an official blog post, Blizzard acknowledged that Warcraft Rumble "struggled to gain the traction needed to meet our long-term ambitions." The company stated that recent efforts to boost the game's popularity proved insufficient to justify continued content development.
This announcement is part of broader, sweeping cuts at Microsoft, which eliminated approximately 4% of its workforce—over 9,000 jobs. While most layoffs occurred outside the gaming division, Xbox studios were notably affected. For instance, Rare's ambitious project Everwild was canceled, along with the planned reboot of Perfect Dark. The Initiative studio was also shut down.
Other parts of the gaming business faced substantial cuts as well. Candy Crush maker King and Bethesda's European operations saw significant layoffs. An unannounced MMO from ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online, was canceled and its development team dissolved. Reports also indicate layoffs at Forza developer Turn 10 and within several Call of Duty development studios. Microsoft has been compelled to deny rumors suggesting Xbox head Phil Spencer will retire following the launch of the next-generation Xbox console.
Alex Apple, a client engineer at Blizzard, posted on LinkedIn confirming they were laid off "along with the entire Warcraft Rumble team." Other developers associated with the game shared similar experiences.

Blizzard clarified in its post that Warcraft Rumble will remain available to play. However, future updates will be limited to routine in-game events and bug fixes, with no new content planned.
Dear Warcraft Rumble Community,
We have an important update regarding the future of Warcraft Rumble. After careful consideration, we have made an incredibly difficult decision. Going forward, we will continue supporting Rumble with updates centered on regular in-game events and fixing issues, but we will not be developing new content.
Warcraft Rumble began its journey nine years ago as a passion project for the world of Azeroth. It launched in 2023, shaped by feedback from dedicated players worldwide and the hard work of a committed team—some of whom continue to support Rumble or other Blizzard titles, while others we have regrettably had to part ways with. Since its release, Rumble has not achieved the sustained success we envisioned. The team has been actively listening to community feedback, refining various aspects, and exploring different directions. While some initiatives showed promise, they ultimately could not set the game on a path to long-term viability.
During this transition, our priority is supporting our colleagues. We are profoundly thankful to everyone at Blizzard and in our community for helping bring Warcraft Rumble to life and for embracing the unique joy this game offers. Your passion and input have meant everything to us.
The game's community has reacted with disappointment to the news, though many admit it is not entirely unexpected given the game's trajectory over the past two years. Many players are now bidding farewell to Warcraft Rumble and its community, while also expressing support for the developers impacted by these changes.
