On Sunday morning, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hinted again at the development of the new Borderlands game, indirectly confirming the studio’s ongoing work on the franchise. Pitchford expressed his appreciation to fans, stating that their enthusiasm for the Borderlands games exceeds their appreciation for the recent movie adaptation. He added that the team is working diligently on the next installment, which left fans eager for more details.
This tease follows Pitchford’s previous remarks in a GamesRadar+ interview last month, where he mentioned that Gearbox has multiple major projects underway. While stopping short of an official announcement, he hinted that fans wouldn’t have to wait much longer for news on the next Borderlands game.
Earlier this past year, the development of Borderlands 4 was officially confirmed by publisher 2K, coinciding with Take-Two Interactive’s acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment. The Borderlands series, which launched in 2009, has sold over 83 mil units, with Borderlands 3 becoming 2K’s fastest-growing title at 19 mil copies. Borderlands 2 remains the company’s top-selling game, with over 28 mil copies sold since 2012.

Pitchford's remarks on social media came shortly after the Borderlands movie faced significant backlash, both at the box office and from critics. The film, despite being released in over 3,000 theaters, managed to earn only $4 million during its opening weekend. Even the inclusion of premium formats like Imax couldn’t bolster its disappointing performance. The movie is projected to fall short of $10 million in its opening run, a troubling figure given its substantial $115 million production budget.
The long-delayed film, which began production more than three years ago, has faced scathing reviews and is now considered one of the summer’s biggest critical failures. Even die-hard fans of the Borderlands franchise have expressed their disappointment, resulting in a poor CinemaScore rating. Critics have described the movie as out of touch with its audience, lacking the charm and humor that made the games so popular. Edgar Ortega, writer at Loud and Clear Reviews, pointed out that the film felt like a misguided attempt to cater to what studio executives assumed would appeal to younger audiences, ultimately resulting in a lackluster experience.
As Gearbox gears up for its next game, the underwhelming reception of the Borderlands movie serves as a reminder of the challenges of adapting beloved video games to film. Nonetheless, the studio is focused on delivering another hit for its gaming fans.
