A New Generation Awaits

Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Hopes to Revive the Series

The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster seeks to revitalize this beloved JRPG series. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a recent Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that this remaster will not only introduce a new audience to Suikoden but also rekindle the passion of longtime fans. The remaster is envisioned as a springboard for future titles. Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, acknowledged the absence of series creator Yoshitaka Murayama, who passed away earlier this year, stating, "I’m sure Murayama would have wanted to be involved as well." Sakiyama, director of Suikoden V, highlighted his desire to reintroduce Suikoden to a wider audience, hoping the IP will continue to grow.

This remaster builds upon the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection. Konami is modernizing this enhanced version for current platforms with several key improvements.

Visually, expect a significant upgrade. Konami promises enhanced HD background illustrations, creating more immersive and detailed environments. The original pixel art sprites have been refined while maintaining their original charm.

A new Gallery feature provides access to music, cutscenes, and an event viewer, all easily accessible from the main menu.

The remaster also addresses previous issues. The infamous shortened Luca Blight cutscene from Suikoden 2's PSP release has been restored to its original length. Furthermore, some dialogue has been updated to reflect modern sensibilities; for example, Richmond's smoking habit has been removed to align with Japan's smoking bans.

Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster launches March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
