Take-Two CEO on GTA 6 Delay: 'Painful but Necessary for Creative Vision'
May 26,2025Author: Brooklyn
Back in February, I had the opportunity to ask Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, about his confidence in meeting the fall 2025 release window for GTA 6. At the time, he expressed strong optimism, stating he felt "really good about it." However, just three months later, GTA 6 faced a delay, pushing its release to May 26, 2026. This development left many wondering about the reasons behind the shift.
In a recent interview, coinciding with Take-Two's latest financial results, I revisited the topic with Zelnick. He explained that as the game approached its launch, the necessity for additional polish became evident. "As we get closer to completion of a title that's seeking perfection, the needs or lack thereof, for continued polish become clear," Zelnick remarked. He emphasized the decision to allocate a small amount of extra time to ensure Rockstar Games could fully realize its creative vision without any compromises. "In this case, there was an opportunity with a small amount of incremental time, we thought, to make sure Rockstar Games achieves its creative vision with no limitations. And I supported, of course, that approach," he added.
While the delay of GTA 6 into the next financial year presents a short-term challenge for Take-Two's financials, Zelnick remains optimistic about the company's upcoming projects. He highlighted the excitement around Gearbox's Borderlands 4, Hangar 13's Mafia: The Old Country, and new entries in the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series. "I feel really good about how Fiscal 26 looks sitting here today," he stated. "And while of course, delays pain me — how could they not? — the most important thing to do is to support your teams in their search for perfection."

With the new release date set for May 26, 2026, I revisited the question of Zelnick's confidence in meeting this target. He responded with even greater assurance: "I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we've been very good about reaching it." This suggests a strong commitment to the new timeline, though in the world of game development, surprises can always happen.
The release of GTA 6 Trailer 2 and the accompanying information from Rockstar have fueled speculation about the game's content. Enthusiasts are buzzing with theories, including the potential inclusion of Liberty City, either at launch or as post-launch DLC.
As we eagerly await further updates, there's a wealth of information already available on GTA 6. This includes comprehensive details on what we know so far, a collection of 70 new screenshots, and expert analyses on how the game might perform on the PS5 Pro.
