While Magic: The Gathering's splashy crossovers with franchises like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have dominated recent conversations, the next major set is already making waves. Tarkir: Dragonstorm marks Magic's return to its iconic plane of Tarkir, and we're thrilled to reveal five exclusive card previews that are likely to dominate draft formats next month. (The expansion is currently available for preorder on Amazon).

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

This quintet forms what Magic designers call a "cycle" - cards sharing core design elements across the five colors. Each is an inexpensive common creature featuring abilities tied to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, plus mana fixing that produces a relevant clan color.
"Three-color limited environments demand robust mana fixing at all rarity levels," explains Wizards' Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. "We prioritized accessibility by embedding fixing in creatures that develop your board presence simultaneously. Traditional fixing options like tapped lands often create tempo setbacks - these designs solve that tension elegantly."

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond notes that while the cycle originated from mechanical needs, commons often serve as cultural touchstones: "These showcase how Tarkir's clans have evolved - from Jeskai monks channeling focused passion, to Sultai Nagas becoming jungle protectors, to dragons manifesting in surprising forms within Mardu ranks."
Recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on tropes, making Dragonstorm's authentic Tarkir return particularly refreshing. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl confirms the creative direction was locked pre-Murders at Karlov Manor: "Our pitch blended Dragons and Clans in unprecedented ways, with Dragonstorms fundamentally shaping our approach. Lauren and I felt immense pressure to craft a worthy continuation - every decision prioritized authenticity."
