After Becoming the Worst User-Reviewed Game Ever on Steam, Overwatch 2’s Recent Reviews Jump to ‘Mixed’

Overwatch 2 Season 15: A Resurgence?

Overwatch 2, once holding the dubious title of Steam's worst-reviewed game, is experiencing a surprising resurgence thanks to Season 15. Nearly nine years after the original Overwatch's debut and two and a half years after Overwatch 2's launch, the game's overwhelmingly negative reception, largely fueled by monetization controversies and the cancellation of the highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, is showing signs of improvement.

While the overall Steam user review rating remains "mostly negative," recent reviews have shifted towards "mixed," with 43% of the 5,325 reviews submitted in the last 30 days being positive. This is a significant shift for a game that has faced consistent negativity.

The positive change is largely attributed to Season 15's impactful updates. These include substantial gameplay alterations, the introduction of hero perks, and the return of loot boxes – features that have resonated positively with players.

Player feedback reflects this shift. Recent positive reviews praise the update, stating it represents the game's true potential, unburdened by previous monetization concerns. One review even credits the competitive pressure from Marvel Rivals, a hugely popular competitor, for forcing Blizzard to adapt and improve.

Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller acknowledged the impact of Marvel Rivals' success (40 million downloads since December) and its influence on Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2, stating that the company is no longer prioritizing "playing it safe."

Despite the positive trend, declaring Overwatch 2's complete comeback is premature. The Steam reviews remain a mixed bag, and reaching a consistently positive rating remains a challenge. However, Season 15 has demonstrably increased player engagement on Steam, with peak concurrent players nearly doubling to 60,000. It's important to remember that these numbers only reflect the Steam player base; the game is also available on Battle.net, PlayStation, and Xbox, with overall player counts unavailable. For comparison, Marvel Rivals boasts 305,816 peak concurrent players on Steam.
