MultiVersus Players Bid Farewell: Game Holds Special Place in Hearts

If you’ve been following the world of crossover fighting games, you’ve likely heard the bittersweet news about MultiVersus. The highly anticipated title, launched in 2024 as a free-to-play sensation, is set to go offline for good. In a January announcement, Player First Games confirmed that MultiVersus Season 5 would mark the end of the game, with the permanent shutdown scheduled for 5 p.m. PDT (12 p.m. EDT) on May 30, 2025. For Warner Bros. Discovery, this marked a significant setback, with the game contributing to a reported $100 million write-down in its gaming division. Coupled with the underwhelming reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the overall gaming business saw a staggering $300 million loss.

In response to the downturn, Warner Bros. made headlines just weeks later by canceling its planned Wonder Woman game and shuttering three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and the very studio behind MultiVersus, Player First Games.

As the clock ticked down, fans took to threads and social media to share their heartfelt tributes. One player reminisced fondly, stating, "MultiVersus was a dream—a platform fighter that emphasized quick offense and 2v2 play, fostering incredible team synergy. Even the voice acting was top-notch, with iconic actors reprising their roles, like Kevin Conroy as Batman and John DiMaggio as Jake." While some aspects of the roster and movesets sparked confusion, the game’s overall creativity left a lasting impression. Another fan noted, "The beta felt like magic. I couldn’t put it down, even when I was sick."

Despite the inevitable closure, the community remains hopeful. As one player optimistically noted, "While it may not be a must-play at social events, MultiVersus stands out for its refreshing team battles, making it a standout platform fighter online." Others acknowledged the challenges of reviving such an ambitious project due to its complex intellectual property ties. Still, there’s a glimmer of hope for preservation as dedicated players aim to keep the spirit of MultiVersus alive even after the servers go dark.

In IGN’s review, MultiVersus earned an impressive 8/10, highlighting its unique approach to team-based combat. For many, the game will remain a cherished chapter in the world of fighting games, remembered fondly alongside titles like PlayStation All-Stars and Tom and Jerry.
