Ōkami 2 — Capcom, Hideki Kamiya, and Machine Head Discuss Hotly Anticipated Sequel in Exclusive Interview

Feb 21,2025 Author: Owen

Twenty years after the original Ōkami captivated players, Amaterasu, the sun goddess and source of all goodness, makes a stunning return in an unexpected sequel. Announced at The Game Awards, this highly anticipated project reunites director Hideki Kamiya (newly independent from PlatinumGames and founder of Clovers studio) with Capcom (publisher) and Machine Head Works (a studio comprised of Capcom veterans). This collaboration brings together seasoned developers from the original Ōkami team and fresh talent, promising a truly exceptional experience.

While details remain scarce, IGN secured an exclusive interview with Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata in Osaka, Japan. The two-hour discussion delved into the sequel's origins, development, and the unique partnership.

IGN's Q&A Highlights:

  • Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames: Kamiya sought creative freedom to develop games reflecting his unique vision. He emphasizes the importance of the creator's personality in shaping the player experience. Clovers studio was formed to realize this vision.

  • Defining a "Kamiya game": Kamiya aims for unique and unforgettable experiences, rather than adhering to a specific style.

  • Clovers and Clover Studio: The name "Clovers" is a tribute to Kamiya's time at Clover Studio, Capcom's fourth development division, symbolized by the four-leaf clover. The "C" in Clovers also represents creativity.

  • Capcom's involvement: Capcom's long-held desire to create an Ōkami sequel, combined with Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, provided the perfect opportunity. The collaboration was a natural progression, fueled by mutual respect and a shared passion for the IP.

  • The Sequel's Genesis: Kamiya always envisioned an Ōkami sequel to complete the original story. Casual conversations with Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi over the years eventually led to the project's inception.

  • Machine Head Works' Role: Machine Head Works acts as a bridge between Clovers and Capcom, leveraging its experience with Capcom's RE Engine and the original Ōkami development.

  • RE Engine's Significance: The RE Engine's capabilities are crucial for realizing Kamiya's artistic vision, enabling the team to achieve previously unattainable visual goals.

  • Ōkami's Enduring Appeal: Despite initial commercial perceptions, Ōkami boasts a dedicated fanbase, evidenced by consistent sales and ongoing engagement.

  • The Dream Team: The sequel's development team includes several veterans from the original Ōkami project, alongside new talent, creating a powerful and experienced group.

  • Addressing Past Shortcomings: Kamiya acknowledges past team limitations and expresses confidence in the current team's ability to overcome challenges.

  • Early Announcement at the Game Awards: The early announcement served as a declaration of intent and a promise to fans.

  • Control System: The sequel's control scheme will balance modern gaming standards with elements that respect the original.

  • Amaterasu's Return: The trailer's protagonist is indeed Amaterasu. Ōkamiden's place in the narrative is acknowledged as a separate entry in the Ōkami universe.

  • Inspirations: Kamiya draws inspiration from Takarazuka stage shows; Sakata from Gekidan Shiki theater; and Hirabayashi from films like Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

  • Defining Success: Success is defined by creating a game that both the creators and fans can enjoy, exceeding expectations while staying true to the spirit of the original.

  • Future Plans: Both Clovers and Machine Head Works aim for long-term sustainability, focusing on collaboration and creative fulfillment.
