It was nearly a year ago at the Game Developers Conference that I first encountered Jump Ship, a captivating four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that ingeniously combines elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL. Having recently played the latest build alongside some of the developers, I'm more convinced than ever that Jump Ship has the potential to be a breakout indie hit in a year already brimming with exciting releases. As it gears up for an Early Access launch this Summer, the game is more polished and engaging than ever before.
If Jump Ship is new to you, it's a non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. Notably, it's crafted to be enjoyable even for solo players. The developers at Keepsake Games have taken player feedback to heart, integrating AI assistants that allow you to experience the game as a single-player narrative. The Prologue serves as both a tutorial and a lore-builder, introducing you to core mechanics like shooting, space suit flying, ship piloting, and combat, all while setting the stage for the story.

Jump Ship now boasts a compelling story woven into its core PvE gameplay. The narrative revolves around a sinister virus that has infected machines across the galaxy. As an Atiran, your mission is to trace the virus to its source at the galaxy's heart and eradicate it. You'll navigate through procedurally generated mission chains in each sector, with missions ranging from quick 10-minute adventures to hour-long epics. The Jump Map uses color-coding to help you gauge the risk level of each mission, ensuring that higher risks come with greater rewards.
Assisting you on this journey is Iris, a non-infected AI introduced in the Prologue, who serves as a narrator throughout your missions. This adds a layer of structure to the robust gameplay foundation. Additionally, the Hangar acts as your base of operations, where you can spend in-game currency on outfit customization, explore the Galaxy Map, and even enjoy a game of soccer during downtime.
The core four-player gameplay is where Jump Ship truly shines. Missions rarely go as planned, requiring dynamic teamwork. One player might pilot the ship and manage the pilot's weapons, while another operates the ship's 360-degree cannon. Meanwhile, the remaining players could be outside, mag-booted to the hull, engaging enemy ships. Should your ship take damage, players must rush inside, grab fire extinguishers, navigate vents, and extinguish flames to keep your ship operational—vital for maintaining your pineapple pizza-maker in working order!

Upon reaching your destination, all four players disembark and navigate through structures to retrieve valuable loot. Facing relentless waves of infected robots, teamwork becomes crucial. Your grappling hook accelerates movement both on the ground and in space, and once the loot is secured, one player must transport it back to the ship while the others provide cover.
Both my demo last year and the recent one were brief, showcasing Jump Ship's appeal in short bursts—meaning you won't need to quit your job to keep up. However, I've yet to experience the full scope of the larger mission structure and the variety promised by its procedural generation. Everything I've seen so far suggests that Jump Ship has the potential to be a major hit. With all the right elements in place, I eagerly anticipate diving in for more.
