Zelda Live-Action Film Delayed by Nintendo

Nintendo has officially postponed the release date of its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's legendary creator, announced via social media that additional development time will be allocated to enhance the film's overall quality.

Originally slated for March 26, 2027, the movie will now premiere on May 7, 2027 - a date previously occupied by Marvel's delayed Avengers: Secret Wars.

"This is Miyamoto," reads the official statement. "Due to production requirements, we're adjusting the release date for The Legend of Zelda live-action film to May 7, 2027.

"While this extends our original timeline slightly, we're committed to utilizing this extra time to perfect the film. We appreciate your understanding."

Nintendo hasn't provided detailed reasoning behind the schedule change, but by taking Avengers: Secret Wars' former release slot, they secure a prime box office window while avoiding potential clashes with other major titles scheduled around their initial March date.

The initial Zelda release date placed it just one week after Sonic The Hedgehog 4's launch on March 19, 2027, potentially competing directly with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Marvel has since rescheduled Avengers: Secret Wars for December 17, 2027.

With production underway for nearly two years, details about Nintendo's Zelda film remain scarce. Casting announcements and plot specifics have yet to be revealed.

First announced in November 2023, the project brings together Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Marvel Studios veteran Avi Arad as producers. Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-finance and distribute the film, with Jurassic World screenwriter Derek Connolly handling scripting duties and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball at the helm.

Following his work on the CGI-intensive Planet of the Apes franchise, Ball clarified in May 2024 that a fully motion-captured Zelda film "wouldn't be his preferred approach". Instead, he envisions a grounded, realistic interpretation of the beloved fantasy world.

"My goal is to exceed fan expectations," Ball emphasized during a project interview. "Recognizing how deeply this franchise resonates with audiences, we're committed to delivering an immersive cinematic experience - something substantial yet magical, serious yet enchanting."
