Nintendo has firmly denied using AI-generated images for billboards in Mario Kart World.
Speculation arose after a Nintendo Treehouse livestream offered a glimpse of the upcoming racing game a few weeks ago. Keen observers noted that some in-game billboards, featuring a construction site, a bridge, and an unusually tall car, appeared unusual.

While many pre-release games include temporary graphics not meant for the final version, Nintendo dismissed claims of AI involvement, stating to Eurogamer: "No AI-generated images were used in developing Mario Kart World."

Generative AI is a trending topic in creative industries, particularly in video game development. Beyond ethical and copyright concerns, labor unions worry about job displacement, prompting video game performers to demand stronger protections against AI use.
Last September, Nintendo’s iconic developer Shigeru Miyamoto emphasized the company’s unique approach, avoiding industry trends like AI. In contrast, EA CEO Andrew Wilson described AI as "central to our business," a view IGN later analyzed in depth. Miyamoto, however, highlighted Nintendo’s distinct philosophy.
In a New York Times interview, Miyamoto voluntarily raised AI as an example of where Nintendo diverges from competitors.
“It may seem like we’re just opposing trends for the sake of it, but we’re really focused on what makes Nintendo unique,” Miyamoto explained.
“There’s a lot of buzz about AI,” he added. “When everyone rushes in one direction, Nintendo prefers to chart its own path.”
Miyamoto’s remarks followed comments by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa in July, who acknowledged that generative AI could be used creatively but raised concerns about intellectual property rights.
“We’ve spent decades perfecting exceptional gaming experiences for our players,” Furukawa said. “While we embrace technological advancements, our focus remains on delivering unique value that technology alone cannot replicate.”
