Dune: Awakening Mid-Endgame Play Revealed Ahead of Launch

Funcom encouraged us to "let them cook," and judging by last night's Dune: Awakening showcase, their efforts have paid off. With early access just days away, Funcom hosted an extensive livestream highlighting the game's mid-to-endgame content and providing an expansive tour of Hagga Basin to showcase "the scale and environmental diversity players can expect." Featured areas included "the lush O'odham region, the treacherous Hagga Rift, and the towering rock formations of Jabal Eifrit."
Drawing inspiration from Denis Villeneuve and Legendary Entertainment's cinematic adaptations, Dune: Awakening marks the franchise's first true open-world experience. Previous beta tests only revealed about 25% of Hagga Basin, making this stream the first comprehensive look at "these sprawling, varied landscapes" in their full glory.
"Before venturing into the perilous Deep Desert, players will face a complete survival experience," Funcom revealed.
"They'll ascend through the ranks of House Atreides or Harkonnen; construct fortified bases; challenge Imperial Testing Stations; unlock advanced blueprints; explore and gather resources using specialized vehicles - and that's just the beginning." The stream also introduced the Landsraad system, "enabling all players to contribute their preferred playstyle, whether PvE or PvP, toward advancing their faction's objectives."
Set on the universe's most lethal planet, Dune: Awakening blends survival gameplay with MMO elements. Players will master Fremen survival techniques while expanding their influence through combat, spice harvesting, base building, and commerce. Originally slated for May 2025, the game's launch was pushed back three weeks to June 10 following beta feedback, though early access participants gain a five-day head start beginning June 5.
"As a Dune enthusiast, I'm particularly impressed by how Funcom has expanded the lore while maintaining authenticity, even while setting Awakening in an alternate continuity," we noted in IGN's closed beta preview.
"Subtle design choices significantly impact gameplay - without spoilers, this meticulous attention to worldbuilding extends to factions and NPC encounters, creating immersive moments that franchise fans will especially appreciate."
