A Nation-Wide Gaming Phenomenon

The game's November 20th launch resulted in a dramatic decrease in internet speeds across Ukraine. Major internet providers, Tenet and Triolan, reported overloaded servers due to the massive influx of simultaneous downloads. Triolan's Telegram statement, as translated, cited the "increased load on the channels due to the massive interest in the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R." as the cause of the widespread slowdown. Even after successful downloads, many players experienced login and loading delays. The disruption lasted for several hours before resolving as players completed their downloads.

GSC Game World, the Ukrainian developer, expressed both pride and surprise at this unprecedented event. Creative director Mariia Grygorovych commented, "It was hard for the whole country, and it's a bad thing because the internet is important, but at the same time it's like whoa!" She emphasized the positive impact, stating, "For us and our team, what's most important is, for some people in Ukraine, they feel a little bit happier than they were before release. We did something for our home country, something good for them."

Remarkable Sales Despite Challenges

The game's popularity is undeniable, with over 1 million copies sold within just two days of its release. This remarkable achievement comes despite acknowledged performance issues and bugs. GSC Game World, operating from offices in Kyiv and Prague, faced numerous challenges, including delays caused by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite these obstacles, the studio remained committed to the launch and continues to release updates addressing bugs and optimizing performance, with a third major patch released recently.
