Ōkami 2 Is Being Made in RE Engine, Confirmed

Mar 01,2025 Author: Penelope

Following the Game Awards announcement of a sequel to the beloved Ōkami, speculation immediately arose regarding its development engine. IGN can exclusively confirm that the game will indeed utilize Capcom's RE Engine, based on interviews with key project leads.

In an extensive interview, Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata confirmed the use of RE Engine, explaining Machine Head Works' role as a bridge between Capcom (IP holder and director of the game's overall vision) and Clover (lead developer). Sakata highlighted Machine Head Works' prior experience collaborating with Capcom and Clover, and their familiarity with the RE Engine, crucial given Clover's lack of experience with the engine. Furthermore, members of Machine Head Works possess experience with the original Ōkami, providing valuable insight during development.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi succinctly stated that RE Engine was essential, emphasizing that Capcom believes Kamiya-san's artistic vision couldn't be realized without it. Kamiya himself added that RE Engine's renowned expressive capabilities are expected by fans.

Sakata further teased the possibilities of RE Engine, suggesting it will allow the team to achieve goals unattainable with the original Ōkami's technology. He stated that current technology, coupled with RE Engine, enables them to surpass their original ambitions.

RE Engine, originally developed for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, has powered many of Capcom's major titles, including various Resident Evil installments, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma. While many RE Engine games feature a realistic art style, its application to Ōkami's unique aesthetic presents exciting possibilities. Capcom's development of the REX engine, a successor to RE Engine, may also subtly influence the sequel, as its technology is gradually being integrated into the existing RE Engine.
