Final Fantasy Reevaluates Turn-Based System After Expedition 33 Success

Jun 28,2025 Author: Eric

The success of *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* has sparked renewed interest in turn-based combat within Square Enix, potentially paving the way for a return to the classic gameplay style that defined early *Final Fantasy* titles. Following the impressive performance of *Expedition 33*, which sold over 3.3 million copies within its first month, Square Enix is reportedly reconsidering its approach to the *Final Fantasy* series and re-evaluating the role of turn-based mechanics in future releases.

Square Enix Reaffirms Commitment to Turn-Based Combat

During a recent shareholders’ meeting on June 25, a shareholder named Yuzu suggested that Square Enix should consider releasing new titles from its flagship franchises—*Dragon Quest* and *Final Fantasy*—on a more regular basis. Additionally, they urged the company to revisit turn-based gameplay, citing *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* as a successful example of the genre’s market potential.

In response, Square Enix acknowledged the success of *Expedition 33* and confirmed that it is actively monitoring shifts in player preferences and market trends. The company emphasized the historical significance of turn-based RPGs, stating that they are “the origin of Square Enix.” This sentiment resonates with long-time fans who have expressed a desire for the *Final Fantasy* series to return to its roots.

Recent entries like *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* and *Final Fantasy 16* have embraced real-time action combat, a move intended to attract younger audiences and reflect advancements in modern gaming technology. In a 2022 interview with Famitsu, *Final Fantasy 16* producer Naoki Yoshida explained that today’s players are more accustomed to fluid, action-oriented gameplay rather than menu-driven systems. However, he also hinted at the possibility of returning to a command-based system in future titles.

With Square Enix now expressing a stronger appreciation for turn-based mechanics, there’s growing anticipation about how the studio might blend traditional gameplay elements with contemporary design in upcoming projects.

Company Turmoil After Sakaguchi’s Departure

Beyond gameplay evolution, the history of Square Enix is deeply tied to its original creative force, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the *Final Fantasy* series. In a recent episode of Nobuo Uematsu’s podcast *NOBIYO To Isshoni*, the legendary composer reflected on the internal state of Square following Sakaguchi’s departure in 2003.

Uematsu described Sakaguchi as the driving personality behind the company during its formative years, likening Square at the time to “a university club” rather than a formal business. After Sakaguchi left due to financial struggles that eventually led to the merger forming Square Enix, the internal structure collapsed. Uematsu recalled feeling uneasy after his departure, admitting that he considered leaving as well.

Despite these challenges, Square Enix managed to rebuild itself and continue producing globally acclaimed games. Uematsu remains on good terms with the company, frequently contributing music to new *Final Fantasy* titles as a freelancer. Meanwhile, Sakaguchi went on to found Mistwalker Studio in 2004 and continues to work on ambitious RPG projects.

Interestingly, Sakaguchi and Uematsu are currently collaborating on a spiritual successor to *Final Fantasy VI*, indicating that their creative partnership—and influence on the RPG genre—remains strong even outside of Square Enix.
