Doom: The Dark Ages – A Return to Roots
Following the phenomenal success of 2016's Doom and its sequel, Doom Eternal, id Software is shifting gears with Doom: The Dark Ages. This medieval-themed prequel eschews the platforming elements of Eternal, focusing instead on intense, close-quarters combat with a renewed emphasis on raw power and melee weaponry.
While the signature arsenal of powerful firearms returns – including the skull-crushing, enemy-gib-recycling marvel seen in the reveal trailer – The Dark Ages significantly elevates the importance of melee combat. Players will wield an electrified gauntlet, a flail, and the standout Shield Saw, each offering unique offensive and defensive capabilities. As game director Hugo Martin stated, "You’re gonna stand and fight."
The game's design draws inspiration from the original Doom, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Zack Snyder's 300. This influence is evident in the frenetic, large-scale combat encounters reminiscent of both 300's battle scenes and the original Doom's arena-style gameplay. The Glory Kill system has been revamped for more dynamic, context-sensitive executions, adapting to the player's position and the surrounding chaos. Level design allows for non-linear progression, offering players freedom to tackle objectives and explore at their own pace. Level lengths have been adjusted to maintain a consistent, approximately one-hour playtime per level.
Addressing feedback from Doom Eternal, the narrative in The Dark Ages unfolds through cutscenes rather than in-game codex entries. The story promises a grand, cinematic experience, expanding the Doom universe and escalating the stakes for the Slayer as his power becomes a target for his enemies.
Control simplification is a key focus. The developers aim for intuitive controls, ensuring that intense moments don't become frustrating button-mashing sessions. Melee weapons are equipped individually, streamlining gameplay. The game's economy is simplified to a single currency (gold), and secrets reward tangible gameplay improvements rather than solely lore details. A customizable difficulty system allows players to fine-tune the challenge with sliders for various aspects, such as game speed and enemy aggression.
The impressive giant mech (the Atlan) and cybernetic dragon riding sequences shown in the reveal trailer are not isolated events but offer unique gameplay experiences with their own abilities and mini-bosses. Importantly, The Dark Ages will feature a single-player-only campaign, foregoing the multiplayer mode of Eternal to fully dedicate resources to the main storyline.
Martin's decision to return to the core principles of the original Doom is a key driver behind The Dark Ages' design. He aims for a distinct experience from Eternal, focusing on a powerful, yet classic, Doom gameplay loop. This deliberate shift in direction has generated considerable excitement, and the May 15th release date is highly anticipated.
