Assassin's Creed Valhalla's extensive gameplay drew criticism, prompting Ubisoft to refine the experience for its upcoming installment, Assassin's Creed Mirage. The developers have addressed player concerns regarding the game's length and abundance of optional content.
Game director Charles Benoit stated that completing the main storyline of Mirage will take approximately 50 hours. A comprehensive playthrough, including exploration and side quests, is estimated at 100 hours. This contrasts with Valhalla's minimum 60-hour main story and potential 150-hour completion time.
Ubisoft's focus on streamlining optional content aims to provide a more balanced gameplay experience. Mirage will feature a more judicious blend of narrative progression and optional activities, aiming for a less tedious, yet richly detailed and narratively deep experience. The goal is to cater to both players who prefer extensive gameplay and those prioritizing a focused narrative experience without an excessive time commitment.
Director Jonathan Dumont highlighted the team's research trip to Japan, significantly shaping Mirage's development. The scale and detail of Japanese castles, mountainous landscapes, and dense forests surpassed expectations, leading to a commitment to heightened realism and detail.
One significant change is a more realistic representation of world geography. Travel times between points of interest will be longer, reflecting the distances in actual Japanese landscapes. However, this increased travel time will be offset by richer, more nuanced locations. This contrasts sharply with the more densely populated points of interest found in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Mirage will feature a more expansive, natural world, with each location boasting a higher level of detail to immerse players in the authentic atmosphere of Japan.
